Over the years, I've analyzed a ton of waterproof dog beds and found they lack the qualities that dogs crave in their sleep area: coziness and comfort. I mean, do it right now—type in "waterproof dog beds" into Google and you'll see thousands of results showing nylon or canvas type dog beds. These beds don't cut it, in my opinion, because of the nesting that dogs do before bedding down. Dogs need something to claw up with their feet — an ancient and specific pre-sleep behavior that gathers up material to create an insulating and soft "pad" to sleep on.
While it's important to have one of these canvas-covered dog beds lying around out on your patio, deck, or backyard, they aren't exactly warming on blustery, chilly days. They have no fleecy material to go underneath dogs, or hooded coverings to pull over on top.
RuffRest Vs. Everyone Else
When I invented our bestselling RuffRest® Ultimate Dog Bed, I wanted a "Goldilocks" middle - a level of perfection where one dog bed offered it all, negating the need to buy several others types of dog beds. RuffRest served as an awesome home dog bed, but could pack up in a jif during an emergency or spontaneous road trip.
So we sewed in a short nap Sherpa fleece on top of the military-grade, water-repellent nylon shell, so that your dog can have something comforting and furry under his belly to warm him up quickly. The short nap also means an easy wash-and-dry, as well as a light softness to keep your dog warm in the fall and cool in the summer. Oh, and our whole dog bed has a bio-friendly, waterproof PU coating, because no dogs of ours are going to breathe in chemical ick.
Finally, tucked away in the bolster, a blanket awaits to lightly cover dogs. In very cold weather, this blanket can adhere to the sides of RuffRest, creating a sealing 3-season sleeping bag. If your dog sleeps hot, no worries -- the sleeping bag has temperature control vents you can open at the feet, to allow for airflow. The entire bed even has a human-grade R-value (insulation score), because we think dogs are family, and are worth the cost of rigorous studies.
And Timberdog is the only dog bed maker to have conducted such thermal lab tests.
How Our Waterproof Tech is Better than What's Out There
While we appreciate the simplicity of simple, nylon-covered dog beds, we at Timberdog took the time to individually wrap the dual foams within the bed itself. This means that even if your dog soils the bed or the bed was stuck out in the rain, you can rest assured that the foam inside would not be ruined.
Each of the two inner foams has their own zippered PEVA casing, much like zippered pillow cases. While this doesn't create a hermetic seal on the foams due to zippers having tiny spaces between their teeth, you can always remove the foams from these casings and hang them out to dry. In 20 minutes or less, they're ready to go back into their casings, and the casings can go back into the bed shell. For most spills, however, from wet and dirty dogs to incontinent seniors and pukey pups, the foams remain completely dry. You only have to peel off the RuffRest shell and throw it in the wash.
