As you would have guessed it, even the foam inside our painstakingly-designed RuffRest Ultimate Dog Bed is not a simple affair. Our dogs are royalty and deserve a happy sleep in a super comfy bed that supports their joints at the same time. And so, in 2017, a full year of foam testing commenced.
We tested every type of foam to see if we could strike the perfect balance of soft and supportive, but could not find one type of foam that did both. So, we looked into putting multiple types of foam into a layered configuration in RuffRest, and that's when we were onto something. We eventually figured out that we needed a top layer of foam that was soft enough to sink to, followed by a firm foam that stopped excessive sinking and held up our test pup, Kashi.
But a few things still weren't right. The soft foam was too soft and prone to crumbling, and the firm foam was too hard. So, we eventually arrived at a high-quality memory foam that formed around Kashi in a squishy, warming way, and a reinforcing layer of foam underneath that was firm without being hard.
We struck gold. We knew we did because dog parents would lay across their RuffRests themselves and remark how comfortable they were. But more importantly, dogs started preferring RuffRest over their familiar ol' dog beds at home.
How could we make the foam even better? We wrapped each layer of foam in a non-toxic PEVA cover that would extend the life of RuffRest for, well, life. Conventional dog beds have a simple velour or faux fur cover, and do not have an inner, water-proof cover protecting their foam, making their foam vulnerable to spills, accidents, and whatever else could seep through the thin, absorbent covering. But we wanted RuffRest to go the distance. Now, if your dog has an accident, simply remove the PEVA-covered foams from inside the bed, and toss the outer shell into the wash.
