How to Make Your Dog's Coat Brilliantly Shine

How to Make Your Dog's Coat Brilliantly Shine

4 min read • By Wyatt West, Staff Writer and Outdoor Fiend, Timberdog

Every dog owner dreams of their pup sporting a sleek, gleaming coat that practically glows in the sunlight. A healthy coat isn’t just about looks—it’s also a sign of overall wellness. Whether your dog’s fur is short, long, curly, or wiry, there are steps you can take to ensure it stays in tip-top shape. Let’s break it down.

IT STARTS WITH NUTRITION

1. Feed a Balanced Diet

The saying “you are what you eat” applies to dogs, too. Your pup’s coat reflects the nutrients they’re getting from their food. Look for high-quality dog food with real meat as the first ingredient, along with healthy fats and essential vitamins.

My dog, Angus, does well on plant-based diets (he gets hot spots, odors, itchy fur, and runny poops on even the most quality of meats). If you haven't given it a shot, try slowly incorporating more fresh plant foods into your dog's diet, such as blueberries, steamed squash, sweet potato, a bit of fruit (make sure you know what your dog can and cannot eat due to potential toxins), and more. After all, dogs are proven omnivores.

2. Add Omega-3s and Omega-6s

These essential fatty acids do wonders for your dog’s skin and coat. Foods like salmon, fish oil supplements, and flaxseed are great sources. Omega-3s reduce inflammation, while Omega-6s support a glossy, hydrated coat. Add oils slowly, as adding too much at once can cause your dog to get diarrhea.

3. Hydration is Key

Dehydration can lead to dry, brittle fur and flaky skin. Make sure your dog always has access to fresh, clean water. If your pup isn’t a big drinker, try adding a splash of low-sodium chicken broth to their bowl to entice them.

Angus wasn't a huge water drinker after his puppy days, so I made sure to put a few ounces of water in his food bowl to ensure he got plenty of moisture in his dinner. If you can afford it, reverse osmosis water is the cleanest water you will be able to give your dog (and yourself)! If you live in an apartment, you can find countertop reverse osmosis machines online (I got mine off Amazon).

GROOMING FOR A GLOW

1. Brush Regularly

Brushing isn’t just for keeping your dog’s fur tangle-free. It stimulates natural oil production, spreads those oils evenly across the coat, and removes dirt and dead hair. For short-haired dogs, a bristle brush works great. Long-haired breeds might need a slicker brush or comb. I like to use my fingernails to give Angus's skin a good scratch because it's more natural than, say, plastic or nylon bristles. Brushes with natural bristles abound online.

2. Bathe Smartly

Too many baths can strip your dog’s coat of its natural oils, but an occasional bath with the right shampoo can enhance shine. Use a gentle, dog-specific shampoo and avoid anything with harsh chemicals or artificial fragrances. Oatmeal shampoos are excellent for soothing sensitive skin. Here's how to ensure your dog enjoys bath time.

3. Condition and Rinse Thoroughly

Conditioners designed for dogs can add moisture and softness. After shampooing, apply a conditioner and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Residual product can irritate skin and dull the coat. I tend to avoid conditioners, just because it can layer onto the fur or hair after some time. Oiling your dog's skin and fur prior to bathtime can be just as effective, and more natural, besides.

4. Try Coconut Oil

Coconut oil isn’t just a trendy human superfood; it’s also great for your dog’s coat. You can rub a small amount onto their fur as a leave-in conditioner and add it to their diet for added benefits. I alternate coconut oil with flaxseed oil in Angus's food, and use coconut oil with a tiny bit of baking soda and turmeric to create a very effective dog toothpaste.

HEALTHY SKIN = HEALTHY COAT

1. Address Skin Issues Promptly

If your dog has flaky skin, hot spots, sores, or excessive scratching, their coat will likely suffer, too. Skin problems can stem from allergies, parasites, or infections, so don’t hesitate to consult your vet if you notice persistent issues.

2. Supplement with Biotin or Zinc

Biotin (a B-vitamin) and zinc are known to promote healthy skin and fur. You can find these in some dog supplements, but always check with your vet before adding anything new to your dog’s diet. It's always best, though, in my humble opinion, to feed your dog fresh foods that abound in these vitamins, so you can avoid the cost and unnatural aspects of lab-made vitamins.

3. Protect Against Parasites

Fleas, ticks, and mites can wreak havoc on your dog’s skin and coat. Use regular preventative treatments to keep these pests at bay. The fewer irritants your dog’s skin has to deal with, the better their coat will look. There are plenty of natural sprays online to repel these pests, but I like to make sure I also use bug-repelling natural shampoos as an extra safeguard.

LIFESTYLE MATTERS

1. Exercise for Circulation

Regular exercise doesn’t just keep your dog’s weight in check; it also improves circulation, which nourishes their skin and fur. A brisk walk, a game of fetch, or a romp at the dog park can do wonders.

2. Stress Less

Stress and anxiety can affect your dog’s coat, leading to shedding or dullness. Keep your pup’s environment calm and predictable, and spend quality time with them to reduce stress.

3. Regular Vet Check-Ups

Some coat problems are rooted in underlying health issues, like thyroid imbalances or infections. Regular vet visits ensure you catch these problems early, keeping your dog’s coat healthy and shiny.

QUICK HOME REMEDIES

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

Mix one part apple cider vinegar with two parts water for a natural rinse that helps restore shine and balance your dog’s skin pH. Use it after shampooing and rinse thoroughly.

Brush with a Damp Cloth

For a quick shine boost between baths, wipe your dog’s coat with a damp microfiber cloth. It removes dirt and gives the fur a polished look.

FINAL THOUGHTS

A shiny coat is a visible sign of a happy, healthy dog. By focusing on their nutrition, grooming routine, and overall well-being, you’ll not only help your pup look their best but also feel their best. So grab that brush, toss them an Omega-rich treat, and keep the glow going strong. They’ll thank you with every wag of their tail.
