Keeping Your Dog Cool in the Summer Heat

Keeping Your Dog Cool in the Summer Heat

3 min read • Leena Chitnis, Founder, Timberdog

Summer's here, and while it means fun outdoor adventures for us, it can be a challenging time for our dogs. I’ve learned a lot over the years about how to keep our pups cool and comfortable during these sweltering months. Let’s dive into some practical tips to ensure your dog enjoys the summer as much as you do.

Hydration is Key

First and foremost, make sure your dog stays hydrated. Just like us, dogs need plenty of water, especially when the temperature rises. Keep a fresh bowl of water accessible at all times (pro tip: add an ice cube or two to the water bowl for added coolness). If you’re heading out, carry a portable water bowl and some extra water. I like to use a half gallon, stainless steel, double wall-insulated growler, so there's plenty of water for both my dog and me.

Shade and Shelter

Whether you’re hanging out in the backyard or going for a hike, providing shade is crucial. Dogs can’t cool down as efficiently as humans, so they need a place to escape from the sun. Set up a shady spot in your yard or bring along a beach umbrella if you’re going to be outside for a while. If I suspect shade isn't enough, I pour some cool water on my dog, Kashi, and rub it into her fur, before heading back to the car or dog-friendly location with AC.

Avoid the Heat of the Day

Plan your walks and outdoor activities for the cooler parts of the day, either early in the morning or later in the evening. Midday heat can be brutal and even dangerous. Plus, who wants to deal with hot pavement on bare paws? Always check the ground with your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.

Cool Treats and Toys

One of my favorite tricks is making cool treats for my dog. Frozen, healthy, and plant-based pupsicles are a hit. Not only do they help cool your dog down, but they also make for a fun and tasty distraction. You can also get creative with toys designed to be frozen; they’re perfect for a hot day.

Never Leave Your Dog in the Car

This one’s a biggie. Never, ever leave your dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes. The temperature inside a car can skyrocket in no time, posing a severe risk of heatstroke or even death. If you’re running errands, it’s best to leave your pup at home.

Know the Signs of Heatstroke

It's crucial to recognize the signs of heatstroke, which can include excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, and collapse. If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cooler place immediately, offer small amounts of water, and contact your vet.

If your dog does suffer from heatstroke, immediate action is essential. Move your dog to a cooler, shaded area right away. Wet them with cool (but not cold) water, and use fans to help lower their body temperature. Offer small amounts of water or ice cubes to lick, but don’t force them to drink too much too quickly. Contact your vet immediately, as heatstroke can cause serious complications and requires professional care. The quicker you respond, the better the chances of a full recovery.

Grooming Tips

Regular grooming can help keep your dog cool. While it might be tempting to shave your dog’s coat, consult with your vet first. Some breeds have coats that actually help regulate their body temperature. Instead, focus on regular brushing to remove loose fur and help airflow.

Fun in the Water

If your dog loves water, take advantage of it! Kiddie pools, sprinklers, or even a trip to the lake can be fantastic ways for your dog to cool off. Just always supervise water play to ensure safety.

Final Thoughts

Summer can be a blast for both you and your dog with a little extra care and attention. Keep these tips in mind, and you’ll be well on your way to a fun, safe, and enjoyable season together.

Here's to many happy, sun-soaked days with your doggo. Stay cool, and give your best friend an extra treat from me!
